Mierau Receives Manitoba Arts Council Major Arts Award for 2017
This award is to support the writing of a memoir about the war in Ukraine and Mierau’s family connections there, drawing on his extended visit to the country in 2016. You can read the Manitoba Arts Council’s announcement in April, 2017, on their site here. To read an interview with Mierau about the project, go here.
The photo below was taken by Alex Kopychko in October 2016, at the front in eastern Ukraine, near Avdiivka. Third from left is Edward Kulinich, a national hero for his volunteer work supporting the Ukrainian army, and for surviving a brutal internment by Russian separatists. Maurice Mierau is on the right, beside his translator, Olga Kalambetova.
